Within easy reach of Gothenburg by car or boat, this
charming private hotel was built in 1892 to meet the
needs of society visiting, what was at the time, the
country’s leading bathing resort.
In 1997 the hotel was lovingly restored by its
current owners to offer wonderful individually
furnished rooms for those looking for somewhere
special to spoil themselves.
To reach the hotel involves a short hop on a foot
ferry (cars are discouraged) across to the island that
is overlooked by the 17th Century Carlstens fortress – it is then just a stroll to the hotel.
Days can be spent walking around the island,
visiting the castle, playing a round of golf on nearby
courses, sailing, exploring the pretty shops and, at
the end of the day, relaxing in the hotel’s wonderful
sauna.
The hotel attracts visitors year round as guests
want to experience the fine cuisine, whatever the
season and it is the ideal location for a romantic
weekend.

Staying at Villa Sjötorp is like staying at a friends
home by the sea, although the food is guaranteed to
be much better. With just ten charming traditional
and individually
decorated rooms
all with private
facilities although
not TV you really
experience the
personal service.
During
summer meals
are served in the
garden or on the
terrace with breathtaking views out to sea. A path
leads down to a small beach. At the centre of the
garden is a large tree from which hangs a swing
that even the most grown up among you will not be
able resist sitting on and soaking up the
atmosphere.
It is worth paying that little more for a large
room, some even come with an extra child bed, dolly
included. The owner Ellika and her small team have
earned a well deserved reputation for their excellent
food so you won’t have to wander far for dinner.

About 11/2 hours north of Gothenburg Handelsman
Flink is a hotel and restaurant that Maria and her
whole family are involved in running. For a long time
guests have come from far and wide to eat in its
excellent restaurant, many tying up their yachts at the
end of the jetty. Last year, 10 pretty twin rooms were
added in two separate buildings, all in a nautical style
and with lovely shower rooms.
You can swim from the jetty or ask Maria to
arrange a fishing trip with one of the locals for crab
or mackerel out into the archipelago. The ideal way to
spend a day is to head off in one of the sea kayaks
on offer and explore the archipelago, resting on one
of the many islands to eat a packed lunch. Don’t
leave without popping into the very quaint shop.
New for 2004 is a sauna and extremely large
jacuzzi.

This popular hotel, with 46 rooms, is 150km north of
Gothenburg in a comparatively larger seaside resort.
The hotel sits at the top of a hill over looking the
town with sea views in two directions.
Accommodation is in well equipped rooms all with
private facilities and TV. As well as a good restaurant
with great views, the hotel has a beautiful new
swimming pool, Jacuzzi and treatments, if you want
to be pampered.
From the hotel you can turn right for a bracing
sea walk along the cliffs or left down the hill into the
town passing old restaurants, ice cream parlours,
cafes and finally to the pretty harbour. Red
fishermen’s huts line the long harbour. Many are now
home to cafes, gift shops and fish shops serving
seafood such as huge prawn sandwiches that you
can sit and eat while watching the fishermen unload
the days catch.
Probably one to head for during summer when it
is buzzing as it really does have an out of season
feel come September, with many of the restaurants
and shops closing, although not the hotel.

From the pretty seaside town of Strömstad, close to
the Norwegian border, after leaving your car take the
ferry for a journey of just under an hour to Ekenäs
on the beautiful Island of South Koster. There are no
cars on the islands so exploring will be on foot,
cycling or by moped, which are available for hire.
Skärgårdshotellet in Ekenäs with its 18 pretty
rooms, all with amazing sea views and balcony, but
no TV, is the ideal base from where to explore this
tranquil island.
The island just 8km2 boasts beautiful beaches,
the nearest just 75m from the hotel, good fishing
and its own archipelago.
From next summer it will be hopefully linked to
the smaller North Koster by a bridge so you can
meander between the two before returning for a well
deserved dinner in the hotels excellent restaurant.
The island tends to be much livelier in July during
the Swedish holidays.

A few miles from the coast this very charming rustic
Inn, mid point between Oslo and Gothenburg, opened
in 1663, is now run by the Öster family who continue
the tradition of excellent food and meeting the needs
of weary travellers.
Set in a park in Tanumshede the main building is
home to a wonderful restaurant putting the local raw
ingredients such as fish, oysters, fruits of the forest
and fields to exquisite use. More recent additions are
the simple recently refurbished rooms, all with private
facilities in, what was once, the village doctors house
just 300 metres away.
While in the area a visit to see the bronze age
rock carvings in Tanum, part of the UNESCO World
Hertitage, is a must.
